Funny smell when using gas! HELP!!!

Not money related, but need help with a funny smell we are now getting when we use our gas hob.

This has only been happening since the weekend. The smell is kind of like unburnt diesel, or like when you first light a BBQ which is laced with lighter fluid.

At first we thought it must have been something we spilt on the hob and not wiped up properly and it was burning off? But we have a 6 burner gas hob and the smell happens regardless of which hob we use?

We don't think its the gas itself as we don't get the smell when we use the gas fire?

Could it be the gas / air mix the cooker combignes is faulty and theres something wrong with the cooker? Strange how everything but the smell seems normal?

We'd really appreciate it if someone could tell us why all of a sudden we're getting this smell?

Any help would be great as its quite worrying!!!

Thanks.
Steve.

Steve ... turn your gas off at the mains and call your gas supplier's emergency number. They'll advise you and it's best not to take any chances in case it's gas escaping.

As it happens, yes we have!!! Why?

Just done another check of the gas fire and you can't smell it there because the fumes must be going straight up the flu, but if I waft the flames so some of the flames come into the room, you get the same smell?

    Could it be the gas?
  • HI

Paint fumes burning in the gas flame . We had the same thing and IIRC it took a while to burn off. Open a window whilst cooking?

    HTH.
PS My mum always cut an onion in half and left it in the room that had been painted,
    I wasn't entirely convinced.......

  • Hmmm, you could be right? We've been painting the wood work and the brushes are currently sat in white spirit in the kitchen, so could very well be!

We'll keep an eye (or even a nose) on it for a week and see what happens! Strange how you get such a strong smell if it is this!

    Cheers bud.

  • Hello, just wondered whether your funny smell went after the recent paint smell had gone off? We have been having our hall decorated over the last 3 weeks and there seems to be a funny smell while cooking. I panicked thinking it was CO poisoning and then saw your thread. Maybe mine will go off soon. I am having our boiler routinely checked next month so may get them to check the hob at the same time, assuming I am still alive!!!

I think you will find that CO2 is odourless. That is why it is so dangerous.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Co2 is harmless though (apart from global warming, obviously) Sure you meant CO which is odourless too and not human friendly.

Sorry, got my pedant's hat on today ;)
