And nothing to do with the private parking company making a fortune out of it, that's just incidental.

You really do need to have a read of the parking sub-board and open your eyes to what is really going on.

Some people are just like that.

    They are known as "trolls".

I've never ever had an issue with them. Not once.

But, then, that's because I don't abuse other people's land when I park.

Land owners quite literally have no other legal choice any more on how they enforce their land.

..my MIL had the same issue, (at Sainsbury), but the signs in the car park actually said 3 hrs, and she got a ticket for being there for over 2hrs (but under 3).

She wrote a letter telling them to "shove it", and she got an apology back and no fine!
So first check the signs, if it was 2 hrs and you were over then I would just pay up as you are in breach of their TC's...

Well lucky for you. 8m tickets were issued by private parking companies last year, a rise of 2m over the previous year. In 2006/7 just 272,000 were issued. Do you really think the behaviour of the motoring public has really deteriorated to that extent in that time?

Of course they do. If there is genuinely a problem and you are not inviting people to use your land to park (for instance use your business), then put a fence and a gate up.

If as in the case highlighted in the OP you only want customers of your supermarket to use your parking facilities then install a barrier system and use the customer shopping receipt to validate parking.

Now you're just being silly. One example [of quite a few] is my wife put one wrong digit for her pay and display ticket, not really abusing anything, and got a £60 "fine" for it. Like many thousands of people have. If that's not "abuse" and bullying by parking eye [yes, them] then i'm a Dutchman. She didn't pay it but i'm sure some do.
