Question re: Insulating a loft

I have bought 200mm thick loft insulation which is encased in plastic with a metalised side which has to face upwards. If I put the insulation down I won't be able to get the floor boarding over the top of it. Also I know it shouldn't be laid over wiring as the wiring might over-heat.
Is it better to complete the boarding all over and then put the insulation on top of the boards?

  • I don't suppose your loft is totally boarded so buy some 4"x2" and screw it with 6" screws to the existing joists where it is boarded and lay the insulation between and screw your boards back, don't nail them for fear of cracking the ceiling below. If it squashes the insulation an inch or so it wont matter.
As for the wiring, don't worry. There is so little current flowing through the lighting cables that they won't overheat any more than they would lying on top. Unless of course you have an electric shower cable up there, in which case leave a bit of space around it. You wont notice a small gap in the insulation.
Don't forget that by insulating your loft it becomes a lot colder in winter so remember that any pipework and water tanks up there need insulating too or you may have a wet bedroom come a really cold spell.
