First Direct account declined

Hello
Has anyone else had an application refused for a current a/c by First Direct ? I am currently with Abbey and they have annoyed me so much this year i wish to change.
I got a letter from FD to say "sorry but..." and checked my credit record which had a rating of 850 ish. Going on this I would think I should be ok.
All my current payments on credit check are up to date, one went into a "1" score, ie one month overdue but is now ok.
Are FD very strict ? I have a £1600 overdraft with Abbey and was going to keep this a/c open to repay that whilst gradually opening FD a/c but now am scuppered.
I think i have had bad credit in the past, can anyone shed any light on FD acceptance/criteria ?
Sorry for long post, waffle waffle !
Thanks

I believe they are stricter than a lot of other banks; some other posters may be able to add more detail.0

tonysgirl,
Is your abbey account overdrawn?
From my experience First Direct look carefully on previous bank statements. If the previous account was constantly overdrawn then they may decline.

Try to open a FD savings account in couple months time. Run it and then try to open FD 1st account.
Once you an existing customer then you can speak to there credit review team who has the powers to overturn previous decisons.
