steam cleaners for allergies?

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this, so sorry if its in the wrong place.
I've got terrible problems with allergies. The allergies appeared after moving into my flat, so I'm pretty sure that the allergens are inside my flat.
I particularly think its cat allergens and mould that's causing me troubles.
I was thinking of getting a steam cleaner and cleaning everything I can with it. The flat has had mould problems. Also my sister gave me her sofas some time back. Without thinking I accepted them as a nice gift. Anyway she had 3 cats, and I'm definitely allergic to cats. So I think the sofa's could well have a lot of allergen on them.
My question really is, do steam cleaners actually kill off the allergens as some suggest?
Also what the best to buy?
I've been looking at this one at argos http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4060383/Trail/searchtext>STEAM+CLEANER.htm
as it says its for allergies.
If anyone has any thoughts I'd be grateful.
Thanks
