No he doesn’t. He only turns off Real-Time Protection to load the malware pack (1:14) and then switches the protection back on (2:29) to run the actual test.

Which deliberately removes the protection that MBP provides! Think of MBP as a bouncer in a nightclub. How would you test your bouncer's effectiveness?

    1) Have him "enabled" and overseeing everyone entering the establishment?

    2) Knock him unconscious, invite criminals into the club, then wake him up and blame him for the fact that things have got out of control?

Yes but only while the test folder file is being downloaded onto the desktop environment to avoid the possibility of it interfering with the download.

Once the folder has downloaded MBAM is enabled again without any loss of effectiveness and the controlled test conditions can proceed unimpeded.

As all the test files in the folder are application files (.exe) they are unable to activate or spread until they are opened – they need to be executed to do any damage.

So the computer is not at risk from them while MBAM real-time protection is disabled.

To use your interesting but not directly comparable “bouncer” analogy; yes he has been relieved of his door duties temporarily but no “criminals” have got into the club and been allowed to cause any damage. They are now in a holding area awaiting detailed scrutiny under controlled conditions.

But whatever you think of the results of the video test it is Malwarebytes themselves who recommend pairing MBAM Premium with an extra security layer.

This would seem to be confirmed by AV-Test Institute’s recent review of twenty one security products where MBAM Premium was ranked in the bottom two for protection.
  • I guess it's all about choice at the end of the day.

With what I know of the Security world (and having worked in it for over a decade, I think it's a reasonable amount) I see a lot of merit in their (Malwarebytes) statement on AV_test here blog.malwarebytes.com/malwarebytes-news/2018/11/malwarebytes-decided-participate-av-testing/

No AV is perfect and nothing will stop everything every time. I am absolutely happy running this as my sole solution alongside Defender, but then I am a little less green than most. If others want to pay for something else, that is their choice, and as long as they have something, I'm happy to leave them to it.

Made into a click linky. :)

I use MBAM Corporate (active scanner, got a free code for it linked from here on MSE a few years ago) alongside W10 Defender. Never had a nasty reach my PC, and I'm not always browsing the light and airy part of the 'net - if you catch my drift. :)

    Best way to use it.

    Malwarebytes recommendation...
No one technology can catch everything, which is why security experts recommend a layered approach. It’s better to have more than one type of tool looking at threats from different angles.

You don't understand how MBP works, nor what it claims to be. It is NOT a traditional antivirus.

It does not run around your "nightclub", checking everyone every time they do anything like a normal antivirus would. Instead it guards the entry points.

If you disable MBP and then copy malware onto your machine, you have DELIBERATELY bypassed MPB's protection mechanisms. Of course it won't work like an antivirus -- it's not supposed to!

Right - at least we can agree on something.

The question is whether or not it is sufficient to rely on Malwarebytes Premium as a main source of protection..

    In Post #9 you say...
...And it does that so well that you don't need a "traditional" anti-virus at all.

    That’s fine – it’s your choice.

However, Malwarebytes themselves even recommend pairing it with an extra security layer…

And because it isn’t a traditional a/v it lacks some of the security features a conventional a/v employs. For example:

It’s not designed to detect old malware

It doesn’t target scripted malware, document files and media files

It’s not designed to remove malicious code that has been injected into legitimate files

E-mail isn’t scanned for malicious files or malicious content.
With all the things that that MBAM can not do, it is not an anti virus application and it remains an anti malware application which relegates it to its complimentary position.
    - David H Lipman, Malware Researcher/Analyst – Malwarebytes Forum

Of course it’s all down to personal preference but why take the risk when you can pair Malwarebytes with a free a/v such as Windows Defender with very little impact on computer performance.
