Shoddy Building Work - Small Claims

Hi,
Three years ago we had a porch built, and every winter since the roof leaks during strong winds. The builders have been back 3 times, but it still isn't fixed properly.
So this year I got out a specialist roofing company, who said the roof was never fitted correctly from new, and gave me a quote to put it right. I've sent this quote to the builders, and told them I intend to get the work done, and will expect them to pay the bill.
Since then I've had no further communications from them - I suspect I may need to take them to a small claims court to recover the £300 it will cost me to fix their shoddy work.
My question is, should I offer the original builders the opportunity to send their own choice of roofers to inspect the problem? I don't want them claiming in court that they were denied this right, and it going against me.
And is there anything else I should do to ensure I have a good chance of winning?
Many thanks in advance.
