memory foam mattress is too hot

Hi,

i am trying to deal with a memory foam mattress that is proving far too hot to sleep on. It is a decent quality mattress, a Silentnight Studio Firmer that is reccommended by which. I picked it up s/h for a great price and it is in great condition. I find it very comfortable to sleep on and is seems ok for my dodgy back. Money is tight and i could not afford a new mattress. I bought it in January 2019. I immediately had to use my 4.5 summer tog as my usual 10.5 tog was far too hot. I was using it on slatted bed and it seemed ok during January/February. I also needed to replace the slatted bed as it was the wrong size for the mattress and i wanted a smaller bed. I picked up a s/h divan bed base and swopped over the base. Summer was far too hot and i had difficulty sleeping. Quite often i had to sleep with only a sheet. My window is open and the heating is off in the bedroom. Currently even with a bedroom temperature of only 16*C i am still too hot. There are several ways to reduce temperatures including cooling mattress protectors/ cooling mattress toppers/cotton sheets/woollen/feathered quilts and even a replacement of the divan with a slatted base. I have researched mattress protectors/toppers and it would seem this might be a possible option. "Deluxe wool mattress protector " from the woolroom.com. I cannot post a link due to new user restrictions
Money is very limited and i simply cannot afford to try/buy all the possible options for cooling this mattress down. I am currently sleeping on my spare bed but this option is time limited. I could swop the beds over temporarily but i need to solve the issue.
I am looking for tried and tested solutions with links to s

pecific products.

Thanks
darrell

Would something improvised like, for example, a large beach towel under two or three cotton sheets do the same job as a topper?

Is it worth contacting SilentNight and asking what they would advise for a customer who finds the mattress too hot?

  • thanks for all the replies. i have my heating set on minimium all the time and was quite happy with my 10.5tog for winter and 4.5tog for summer. i have done alot of research and there are plenty of different products available but i cannot afford to try them all. i will contact silentnight over the issue. i do not have any 100% cotton items to try and i cannot experiment by spending money. I need tried and tested recommendations.

    thanks

Memory foam mattresses are hot. Some have added cooling gel or whatever (I have one) and still find it hot.

Check the blurb from where you bought it. Many offer X number of days to try and get a full refund if you don't like it.

Hopefully you'll be able to swap it for another. As above, worth contacting Silentnight too.

You have my sympathy, I spent one night on a memory foam mattress in a relative,s hiuse and felt ai was being cremated! I didn,t sleep a wink.

If you're looking for cheap and cheerful solutions could you try filling hot water bottles with chilled water? That might at least add a temporary cooling element.

Storing a thick towel in plastic bag in the freezer and bring it out every night to lie on may also help to cool you down.

Not permanent solutions I know but might help to ensure the odd colder nights sleep.

Simply put your spare duvet underneath you, as though it were a mattress topper/bottom sheet combined.

I bought a Silentnight mattress and used it for around 2 months. It was unbearable I would wake covered in sweat and my bedding was soaked. I had started a new medication at the same time and just thought it was my new drugs and that it would all settle down. It didn’t, the mattress is in my garage ready for the dump.

    Many offer 30-100 night guarantees.

    This is from Dreams:

I think all of the 'mattress in a box' type ones offer around 100 nights or so testing period. I've got an OTTY which, although warmer than my last one, is just so divine I cannot sing its praises high enough. Love it.

The OP said they'd bought it second hand. I don't think the original manufacturer will take it back.
