compressing video

having just got a firewire cable for my pc i am currently importing one of my dv camcorder tapes. it has 1hr 30mins of footage and after importing it, it took up a massive 18.9gb. i compressed it and after that it had only gone down to 17.3gb. i am currently compressing that. will i be able to get it down to a good size? i do hope to be able to get the full 1hr 30mins small enough to fit on one dvdr which of course is only 4.7gb.
so will i be able to do that? does anyone have any tips how to get it down to that size? if i keep compressing the previously compressed video will i get to were i want?

ok, well the second compression has finished and that one is still 17.3gb. so i guess i cant do it that way. it is also annoying me because when i right clicked and then send to, followed by compress to zip, it has gone and compressed into adobe reader and that cant play video.
so it is obvious i dont have a clue. i am going to have a look in windows movie maker. if that doesnt work i will have to go and install the cdrom that came with the camcorder and hope there will be a solution there.
    please help!!!!!

No time to look into right now.

You can try downloading and installing the Nero 8 Fifteen Day Trial and use that to Author a DVD, but it may clash with your Roxio package.

If you do decide to install it, don't install the ASK toolBar and de-select ALL option for it to take over your computer.

Hopefully, it will recognise your footage. If not, capture the material again using NeroVision 5 and author the DVD from there.

When I used my DV camcorder I took small chunks out as its much easier to deal with say 15 minutes bits. I used ulead videostudio to import the tracks and then add effect, cut n paste and then imported another 15 minutes or whatever that scene is and so on. I then add them all together and exported them onto dvd 4.3gb and a 90 minute tape fitted easily on a dvd, of course I lost a little bit with cut n paste but not much it was encoded to mpeg2. You can also encode it yo mpgeg4 which is much more efficient than mpeg2

You can't compress something that's already compressed, if youc ould you could keep compressing ti until it didn't exist!

As said above have a look at https://www.videohelp.com there are lots of guides on there. Did you get any video editing software with your camcorder? They often give away cut down versions which are usually fine for importing video and converting it to DVD.

despite the pc saying it is now 17.3gb i managed to get it all onto a dvdr last night. it took an age to burn. i just dont get why 1hr 30mins of video takes up so much room. i am now going to try and import selected parts because i want to send short clips via email. i just hope i will be able to get the length of clip i want smaller than the 10mb limit. windows movie maker seems rubbish for editing so i installed the cdrom that came with the camcorder. i didnt have time to have a go with that, i will have a go tonight. if that does not work i will refer to the links here.

Forget about the 10MB limit. If you want to send large files, such as video files, use a file hosting site such as YouSendIt.

Once uploaded, it will produce a link, which you can send to friends and family. They can click on the link and download the file from there.

100MB limit. Kept for 7 days.

For larger files(Up to 1GB) you can use Badongo.
