Agreed quote for work increased last minute

To cut a long story short i had a quote for some clearance work in my front garden, cutting back, some earth removal that sort of thing.

After a couple of hours of work, i was told some of the work is a little more difficult than anticipated (they came to look at what needed to be done prior to the quote) , so they couldn't do it all today, more equipment needed etc.

I agreed, paid them the full monies when they finished and agreed a new quote for the rest of it due to me appreciating the fact it simply wasn't possible without them hiring the equipment they needed.

That work is due to be carried out this weekend but now they are asking for more money than was agreed with additional equipment hire. I've pointed out that technically they should have completed all the work that was quoted for and agreed in the first place and i was being nice agreeing an additional quote to come back to do the rest.

I'm really disappointed and annoyed as i felt these guys were really decent, they're also online with really good reviews.

What do you think?

Par for the course with tradesmen. I do as many jobs myself as possible.

be honest with yourself, was the initial quote too cheap (in hindsight)
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Not at all in fact both quotes if paid would work out more expensive if the work had been carried out in one go. It's not as if they didn't know what had to be done and quotes originally on that basis.
  • You either pay more or you tell them to walk.
It's a simple choice, comes down to how you feel about it.

I agree with what others have said. You have two choices, and from your comments ("I'm really disappointed and annoyed"), it sounds like the most appropriate action would be to tell them you no longer require their services.

You have paid them for work so far, so they won't have any basis for complaint - if they do the rest of the work, I get the sense your simmering resentment will surface at some point. Plus you will feel complicit in feeling duped (regardless of whether they are correct, you feel like you've been duped).

Thing is I prefer to use local businesses and such because I like to support local economies rarther than give money to faceless corps. I also think some trades people get a bad reputation when most aren't like that. This situation has sadly proved the sceptics right.

I'll just say thanks but no thanks. I've already reminded them of what we agreed but had no response.
