Barclaycard altering payment date

Options
Apologies if this has been asked before. I did look, but couldn't see anything.

My son has one of Barclaycard's 29.9% credit cards. He has had it for about two years and always has a payment date of on or around the 12th of the month. He has just had his statement and has been charged £12 for 'late payment', having paid the balance off on 31st October. He has just spoken to them and they said that they changed the date to 30th October that month and he should have noticed. It's back to the 12th December as usual for next month.

Can they do this without making a point of telling him? I appreciate that he should have checked, but after the date being the same for so long, he had got into the habit of paying the balance off on a certain day. I can't honestly say that I would have noticed if the date changed on my CC.

Any help appreciated.

To avoid any further problems get him to set up a Direct Debit to take the min payment.

Yep, read the statement/ direct debit. If it's not convenient or the small print is missed, Ker-Ching, another £12 in Barclays coffers! A complete scam and as a consumer website we should be outraged, not meekly agreeing with the Bank. Fight for a refund of the £12, and try writing, it can be more effective and replying to a letter will cost them more than £12!

Before writing i would go into a branch and ask them to refund the charge explaining that the date had changed and the very next day the payment was with them. I know someone that went to a few branches to get some charges dropped. (Only because it might be dealt with nearer the time of the charge) But worth writing a letter if you can't get the money back.

Some of the banks use the lunar calander to determine dates for payment rather than a set monthly date. Something to be aware of and watch out for as i'm pretty sure it will happen again at some point.

Normally I'd say (or think these days...must have mellowed) "serves you right, you should have read the statement".

However, moving a payment due date by a full two weeks isn't playing ball...especially when it miraculously goes back to it's normal date the following month.

So, I'd first ask for the fee to be waived, citing the above, and if they refused I'd go down the official complaints route. I'm sure, once presented with the timescales, they'd rather pay up than have you go to the FOS after 8 weeks.

    Good luck.

And MABLE's advice is good...take heed!
  • Thanks for the replies. He has just rung them and they have refunded the charges after he pointed out how unreasonable it was. As for setting up a direct debit, he has gone one better and cancelled the card :)

Another stunning triumph for the greedy Banks! Well done Chriseast, if everybody took that stance when messed around, maybe the Banks would actually start to think about customer service.
