O/S Daily Wednesday 13 November 2019

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning everyone

Hugs to those that want/need them, those who are poorly and those who are looking after a poorly person x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

Dark, damp and cold.

DH is watching catchup tv with a cuppa, I'm enjoying my first cuppa whilst on here, DS1 is getting ready for work and DS2 settled and ok.

Dinner last night was a non-event as DH and I went xmas shopping and had a takeaway meal when we got back - we were both still too full to eat another meal so DH had a cuppa and a slice of cake. DS1 went out to eat with friends. Dinner tonight will be egg, bacon, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms and beans.

We did very well with the shopping, we only have to buy gifts for both sets of parents, and both our boys - but we have an idea of what they're all getting. Today we're going to visit DH's granddad.

Keep safe and well x

  • Morning folks and thanks NMLC. Brr we are back to a frosty start this morning and forecast to remain cold all day.

I am dithering about going to Leeds today for more Xmas shopping. I have a list a mile long of people I buy for, as well as all the family, and I can't do with battling the crowds in December. I have bought a mountain of stuff already but still more to get.

DD and bf are resuming the caravan shutdown today. There's still more to cram in the caravan, then the awning can come down and the van covered. Hopefully by teatime it will be finally done.

Thinking of GERS today and hoping all goes well. Get well wishes too for the injured and recuperating. So many of us are in the wars just now. ((HUGS)) for all who need them and thinking of our absent friends. Take care all xx

    Morning :hello:

redruby I barely saw mr tru yesterday and he's still in bed at the moment, I promise I'll get back to you x

Gers I missed sending you good wishes, sorry! I hope you see this later, thinking of you x

    Great new taff :T

Mehefin I was hoping you'd post to let us know about the first meeting – I was imagining a story of shyness, one horse approaching the other after a short while then them running around a field together (or something just a bit less Disney, maybe!). What a nightmare for you, I hope all the injuries heal quickly – human and horse! - and you're all OK this morning x

RosyRed Thank you, I had no idea about gov statistics and asbestos, I googled it after reading your post so I could show the brothers and put their minds at ease a bit. Mr tru found out before I could tell them, the GP rang to send condolences and when he was asked about it, it was explained. He seemed surprised that he didn't know, so I think it was probably the hospital's job to explain it at the time.

I smiled at your cash stash stories - and was a bit relieved to find out it was normal - so thanks for those :D

SIL has declared that no-one is ask her to get involved, she's staying out of it. I find it hilarious that she thinks it was her decision :rotfl:

I checked everything on my washing machine – with help from engineers and their YouTube videos – and it needs a new motor. The machine was under £300 and I've had it for almost seven years, the motor is around £100. I decided it made more sense to replace rather than repair and almost ordered one but decided to wait until I'd finished the job I was doing at the time. The phone rang, it was BIL asking if I wanted FIL's washing machine :D It's already here and has done it's first wash. I feel very posh, I've never had a Bosch before :D

I was in a right mess after pulling that machine out, I managed to wriggle in sideways to get behind it and check the inlet pipe. Tried to turn around to get to the drain hose but couldn't so I had to wriggle back out, turn to face the other way then repeat the wriggling. It was filthy behind there so I cleaned it all out, by the time I'd finished I was very dusty and my jumper had collected cobwebs. If I'd known I'd be getting rid of it (I was still at the testing stage!) I'd have waited til it was gone. On the plus side, I found three large Ikea bags and a dog toy :D

I've cancelled most of FIL's things, I couldn't get through to a couple of places so I'll try them again today. Do Sky ever answer their phone?! Only one company has said they need to speak to a close family member or an executor. It's for the gas and elec, we want that left on so they need to arrange payments with someone. I expect Severn Trent to say the same. But I'm pleased I've been able to do most of it.

After I've made those calls, I'm going to try to have a normal day – I haven't had one in what feels like months, but it's actually only been around three weeks. So I've put the washing on and have put last night's washing up away. Can't believe I'm looking forward to mopping the floor and dusting the windowsills :D

Tru, the water company didn't charge us for mum's house when it was empty, but that was the northwest. We also didn't pay council tax for a while but the house wasn't sold after 12 months so that kicked in again. I thought that was wrong because there was no-one there to use the council
services and we had to pay the full whack without the reduction they give for a single person occupancy. Hopefully it won't take so long to sell your FiL's but mum and dad's was the ultimate fixer-upper on half an acre so we had to wait for the right person to come along.

Gers might be in surgery now so I hope it's all going well.

Mehefin, I hope the mares are ok today.

We've got a bed being delivered this morning and the plumber coming round to discuss the work he is doing for us. I think I might leave Steve to it and go to Skipton because I want to visit the Fent shop.

TA, I haven't really thought about Christmas yet. I got a couple of small toys for the baby but that's it. Luckily I don't have hordes to buy for and Steve is easy this year because he's decided to join the local golf club so that will be his present. He'll soon be pestering me about what I want and I have no idea and when I say nothing he gets cross.

Morning all from a subdued mehefinland

tru I loved your 'my little pony' scenario but unfortunately it s rarely like that in RL. Most herd animals have a hierarchy and very often a matriarch . Its 'pecking order' on a much bigger scale. However the poor girl is healing and the longer she is in the same barn and they can have the occasional sniff and squeal acceptance will grow. They will have to sort out which is boss though so we may have a fraught time in a few weeks when the stiches are removed. We have put Fairy in the middle box and she just wants to be friends with everybody so hopefully it will pan out ok in time.

Our friend and neighbour passed away on Monday and although we knew she was ill it came as quite a shock to find out from her partner last night. She had a kidney transplant a few years ago which didn't take well and she was in and out of hospital quite a lot. Then she had a fall in September and broke her femur at the very top, and literally went downhill from there. It is so sad in that she was about to become a granny for the second time in 2 weeks. Her partner is devastated as you would expect.

On that gloomy note I shall wish everyone a safe day and as always hugs and spoons to those in need ( or even if your not)

    Morning all

Bright and sunny here but very cold, my foot seems more painful today than ever so more resting for me, I have a couple of tiny jobs to do then it will be back on sofa with feet up and a film (I could very easily get used to this !)

Dinner tonight will be some pork fillet roasted with garlic, some sw chips roasted tomatoes and peas, will only take me about 10 mins to prepare and then shove in the oven later.

I have been doing bits and bobs of online shopping for xmas and getting things delivered, I will need to pop out to the shops to get some bits but try and only do this once or twice as I cant bear shopping at the best of times let alone at Christmas.

Mehefin I do hope the my little pony mob wars settle soon ! xx

Gers hope all goes well xx

Nels Happy Birthday to your mum. hope banana gate goes well xx

Right I need some toast and marmite, have good days all xx

Morning all! The cake came out really well with that recipe so thanks gintot, I would have normally done all the creaming etc but thime, no need and it still came out perfectly. I did a trawl around the internet and came up with something I'd never seen before, cake strips...apparently they make the cake come out flat wih straight sides...who knew?
The wood has been delvered, OH is stacking it and I'm about to start my second cake in two days...First one was OK but I will be tweaking since it wasn't perfect, most notable, the buttercream wasn't...too hard...
then it's off to see my sewing teacher who has been in the wars, and then fat club tonight. #I have finally managed to get the light attached to the ceiling in the porch, and the wiring threaded through the door framing ready to wire in after the cake. Look at me making it sound much more technical than it really is...

Ruby, rest etc etc...It was the drawing throbbing pain I really hated when you were sitting down doing nothing....Gers, hope it went well! Nelski, hope today goes without incident. snoozer, yeah, get out and enjoy yourself :) what's a fent shop? nanny, hope you're doing better , congrats on the weight loss if it's a good thing, go eat cake if it's a bad :) actually, eat cake anyway! tru, well done you! TA, hope the shopping doesn't wear you out. Mehefin, you are having a rough time of it aren't you? Would a big glass of rum and ice help? Hope you're all doing OK those reading along...Wreck it Wednesday....

-taff fents are off-cuts of material or end of rolls, I think it must be a Yorkshire term. Unfortunately I didn't find what I wanted - a plain cream fabric for Chris and Crystal'd dining chair cushions. They had the right thing but not enough of it, or one that was a bit too yellow (they are very fussy.

Laura has told me they are down to a choice of two names now, both of which are somewhat unusual.
