Any recommendations on reputable car hire firms in Faro, preferably the airport please. Don't want to be taken for a ride (quite literally)
Any tips on what to watch out for would be great too.

We found Zit Auto to be very reasonable and reliable. Not connected with them in any way. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
We used Europcar in September and they were pretty good.
There was a fair bit of waiting around at first to register but you can pre-register with them before hand online or over the phone which might be a bit quicker.
One thing I’d definitely suggest too is to pay the waiver to upgrade your insurance in case you have an accident or someone crashes into you. We paid this and upon getting the car back to the villa realised the car already had lots of dents and scratches not caused by us. As we had paid the waiver fee it didn’t matter as they couldn’t then blame the damage on us!
There is also an option to pay a one off toll charge so you can drive on their motorway. I would definitely recommend paying that as we didn’t and had to use the back road (which ran parallel). It took way longer and we had the added stress of avoiding the toll road in a foreign country which was quite stressful at times nearly accidentally taking a wrong turn! If you do end up going on the toll road and you haven’t paid the fee they can charge you a penalty as there is a small sensor in the car which detects you’re on that road!
It can become quite expensive but much less stressful so you can relax on your holiday!
