octavia vs focus
Hi all,
looking to buy an estate car for my family. narrowed it down to couple cars and can not make decision. octavia 2010 1.9diesel 105 one owner from new or focus 2011 1.6 tdi 115, last owner had it for only a year and timing chain not done.
both done circa 120-130k
my heart seems to want focus as it comes with usb/ bluetooth, but my common sense says octavia
any opinions, advise?
thank you

My last car was a 2010 Octavia estate, I only got rid of it as my left knee is knackered from rugby and I needed an auto. I replaced it with a new Octavia estate.
I am biased, but I can't fault my car, this our 4th Skoda and they've all been great cars. They come with a decent selection of gadgets, they are cheap to service and maintain and certainly from our experience are reliable.
The boot on the Octavia estate is vast and as mentioned if USB/Bluetooth is a must have then go to Halfords and get a replacement stereo (you can also get USB adaptors that plug into the cigarette lighter."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
two different sizes of car.
Does USB and Bluetooth really influence a decision? Goodness me!!
If you need the space of an estate get an Octavia, robust, sensible, unpretentious cars.
Timing belt should have been changed at around 80 000m or 4yrs.
Make sure you can get comfy in both, possibly thats more important than usb and bluetooth.0 -
I would go for a Skoda every time. Brilliant cars."For every complicated problem, there is always a simple, wrong answer"0

...Octavia all the way, had 3 so far all been really good. Last one was a 1.4 petrol...brilliant engine.0

Avoid the Focus as it has the problematic 1.6TDI engine.0

I have no experience with the Octavia but reviews seem v positive in general.
My honest opinion on the Focus - Whilst I quite like the look of the newer models (2011 onwards) and they have made big strides in comfort and interior quality I would not touch one with a barge pole given the numerous issues both with Ecoboost (well documented) and diesels, sadly IMO Ford have dropped the ball with engine reliability on the newer models in a rush to make them 'efficient'. They are not a patch on the durability of the MK1 engines (current owner here) across both petrol and diesel variants.
So to summarise..I'd rather have the Skoda!0 -
Have driven over 20 of each for a couple of months at a time and would say if you were looking at auto 100% Octavia.
If you are looking at manual then 99% Octavia.
In fairness neither let me down but all were new.
Octavia just handles better, is smoother, more solid and pleasant to drive especially over long distances.
Reliability is also a lot better - lots are taxi and ariport cars (dont buy those) but they routinely did a million miles on the original engine and gearbox.
I saw Mondeos do similar but cant recall ever seeing a 400k+ focus in any workshop. Am sure some have done but cant recall seeing any.
Servicing wise costs are similar, I just think the Octavia has got more miles left in it and is a nicer drive.0 -

I have the 1.5 diesel focus 2016, just coming up for 100000 miles and it hasn’t missed a beat, I know many other people who have done 130000 plus in theirs ( same engine) and they have all been reliable0 -
