Potential engine problem?

Today I drove for about 20 minutes and when I parked the car and turned off the engine, something under the bonnet kept running, it sounded like a fan or some kind of motor and was pretty damn loud but the engine itself was definitely off. After about 10 minutes of not knowing what I do I decided to start the engine and then switch it off again and the fan stopped.
It's the first time this has happened, there were no warning lights on the drivers display from what I could see.

Nowadays most of what goes on under the bonnet baffles me, but it used to be perfectly normal for the electric fan to continue for some time.0

Fans will continue to run for a short term after the engine has been switched offIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

But why is it happening now for the first time in months? It wasn't even a long intensive drive, was just 20 minutes down the road. I've driven for over an hour before and switched off the engine with no fan continuing afterwards.0

The fan will run on more often when the AC is has been used, even though it's near winter AC is still used in many modern cars.0 -

Hmm come to think of it I did have the heating turned on for about half the journey. I've never really used the heating before so that might be why it's the first time. I'll see if it happens again with the heating on / off and go from there then.
Cheers.0 -

Cheers.
Using the heating cools the engine. the heater matrix is just another radiator.0 -
It could have been in the middle of a DPF regeneration.

Was going to be my suggestion too.
My Insignia does this, due to the DPF cleaning progress involving exhaust temps well beyond "normal".Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0
