Food in Vietnam is fantastic. Had a couple of cyclo riders who used to pick us up daily from our hotel and we used them every day we were there.
Always bought them a meal at places they recommended as to where locals went. Plates washed in cold water from a hosepipe, but food freshly cooked ..... no stomach problems at all.
Try and find the Pho soup place that was run by a north Vietnamese spy basically, as his soups are great. We had quite a long conversation with him. Think you may find it in a Lonely Planet Guide book.
Did not fancy the one Keith Floyd went to as it served bats as well as cobra. Did go past it, but decided not to go in. Have eaten stir-fried cobra, but not had to drink the blood!!!
Forgot to add this was in Saigon.

  • Agreed, we ate great food in both Vietnam and Cambodia. Avoid restaurants in western type hotels / restaurants.

Stick to local restaurants and places that seem busy and have local people. Food can be spicy but in our experience was always tasty and healthy.

I also had good experiences at D'Maris.

Oddly, their website no longer works; https://web.archive.org/web/20180331132429/http://dmaris.vn/index.php/en/

I hope that doesn't reflect on the quality of the product. I ate at the D' Maris An Phu location, where it was described as the biggest buffet in the world. Much the same price as the Ngon Villa buffet.

Though it may be that the quality and quantity of products may have diminished since I was there.

Not just the food - don't forget the drinks. Some of the cheapest beer in the world, fantastic fruit juices, very fresh coconuts and a coffee culture all of their own (you must try egg coffee - it sounds revolting but is actually very nice)

We were in Vietnam for a month earlier this year, visiting Hanoi, Ha Noi, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh and some day trips to other places in between, such as going to Ha Long Bay and seeing the Golden Bridge (the famous one with the hands) near Da Nang.

The food was immense and found it to be to a very good standard. We even went to a French place a copy of times, a couple of steak places which were sublime and a Greek place in Hoi An which was better than just about every Greek restaurant I've been to, which is many (that includes in Greece!). Being Vietnam, it is very affordable.

Maybe just check tripadvisor before heading out (get yourself a sim which is about £10 for 4 weeks if memory serves) but enjoy your time - we absolutely loved it there and I hope to return one day, it's a fabulous country with great people. #notenviousatall

Fresh each day, out of the barrel Bia Hoi, while sat people watching in the Old Quarter of Hanoi.

Reading this, Hanoi has suddenly gone to the top of my 2020 Holiday Ideas list. I was there 4 years ago but felt like I hardly scratched the surface of such a fascinating city.

I've spent lots of time in Vietnam, I'd recommend avoiding any of the touristy restaurants as the standard of food and hygiene is lower while the prices are higher. With street food you can see where your food is being cooked and stored. They do eat lots of salad in Vietnam but only once have I been made ill by salad.

You don't say where you're going, but each region has its own specialties to seek out, it's not all Phố and spring rolls. Give us your destinations and I'm sure people can give you specific recommendations for what to eat and where.

Get stuck in and remember that you can buy antibiotics from any pharmacy :)
