The way I am looking at this is that you bought where you live now as a family home? You don't any longer have the family so you don't need the extra space for them but you are still paying for it.

They only bought the place 2 years ago.

Kids on £80k probably left long before that.

OP review your decision making process that led to this bungalow and work out where that went wrong.

Think carefully about what you do like about the place you currently live in.

Thing about why you need/want to change house.
Think about why you need/want to change area

It is a lovely village with everything you need but so is the other one, just by the sea rather than the hills

So does it really come down to countryside versus coast? I think there is some property show about that on one or other of these obscure TV channels...

For me, it's a no-brainer: I hate the wind (not sweet, little zephyrs but pretty much anything above that unless I have washing to dry) Countryside all the way for me; OH loves to visit coast. Whether he would like to live near it is irrelevant while I breathe.

If that is the dichotomy, did you overrule the decision whether or not to buy your current home? Is it your OH's turn to decide where you live? I think the two of you have a great deal to discuss; I hope you can resolve it to your mutual satisfaction. Partnership involves a degree of compromise, as you know.

    I wish you luck.

Oh, gawd, probably... There's one about every other potential situation.

There's locations well-sheltered from the prevailing winds on the coast, and there's windy locations inland. We're on a hill two hours from the nearest sea, and have a wind tunnel between our back door and an outbuilding.

Completely different area, not a comparison. There are however, lots of over priced houses where currently live and may move too.

Estimate is based on a very similar property that sold for £632k last month

The only way to really know is to put it on the market and see what offers come in? You can always change your mind about selling.

Just a thought: You mentioned your kids are happy working? Presumably adults in late teens/early 20's? Odds are pretty decent that in a decade or 2 you might have the pitter-patter of small feet running around your future home once again. If you do downsize, presumably you'll still want room for future Grandchildren etc...? :T
  • I seriously doubt they are talking about downsizing to a one bed lol.

Unless I had to , I would never give up detached.

The rest requires a good chat between you to try and pick something that suits you both. It might not be either of the current options.

It seems a shame that you've put a lot into doing up what sounds a lovely property but one of you is not at home there.
