Credit Card with Very Poor Credit

So after 4 years of destroying my finances and almost my relationship through being a compulsive gambler. I have now been clean for 6 months and I am looking to restore my credit somehow.
We have high debts, but these will be paid off in January with the sale of the house.
We both have numerous defaults but no CCJs.
We believe it would be sensible to have a joint credit card to use for day to day spend and pay off in full every month. However, I am not sure if we would be accepted on any of them and don't want to keep trying hoping that one lets us in.
Any ideas on best ones to go for?

  • Sub prime - aqua, Vanquis, Cap One. If rejected, wait a month or two.

There are no joint cards in the UK though - one of you will be the accountholder and can make the other a secondary cardholder.
  • There is no such thing as a joint account credit card in the UK. In the UK you can have an additional cardholder.

Have a read of the following article:

Are the high debts and defaults from credit card accounts?

If accepted you'd be better off applying individually for your own accounts - so that both of you can build up a pattern of managing credit responsibly. Try the eligibility checkers for Aqua, Vanquis and Capital One to begin with (not a full application unless it tells you that you are approved, or have a high chance of being approved). Also bear in mind that there are referral codes out there (I have some) that can get you a small cash reward when you open a new card. (Not that this would be the reason to take out a card!)

Try Vanquis... it's usually the easiest to get. Use their eligibility checker and then apply.

I did at one point have 32 defaults (although most of them have dropped off now with age, there’s some remain) and I have 4 sub prime cards- 2 x Capital One, a new Vanquis (although the interest rate on that should be illegal- I don’t pay interest ever) and a 118 118 Money- that one is decent as there’s no interest and no extra charges (there is a monthly fee but my credit limit is so small the fee is tiny, less than what my statement tells me the interest on my Capital One card would be if I had ever paid them a penny in interest)
The mantra on here is- always pay in full! If you can’t pay it in full- don’t use it. I pay all mine in full, never paid a single penny in interest, never once been even a minute late paying and never gone over my limit. Capital One though are hard to get and stingy with their limits and their limit increases! I previously had an Aqua though and would recommend them- they were very good to me when I was ill.

    Not a typo :D
Yes it’s thirty-two. I had a very good job and a lot of credit- was managing it fine and always paying on time without any problems - until I got cancer and couldn’t work. It was all written off- every last account as I was on ESA for a long time as I was very poorly- but the defaults lingered for a while.
