Service/MOT car I'm selling?
Changing car next year to keep my car allowance - it's gotta be done by April 1st so I'm aiming to switch in Febuary. The MOT on my current car is due on the 11th April and tax in May, though I understand I can get some of the tax cost back. Just trying to work out what I need to be budgeting for...
It's an old car ('05 Golf) and not worth that much - maybe £1500. I'm not factoring that money into my purchase of another car. I'd actually quite like to keep the Golf for my husband, but we don't need two cars. OH is learning to drive, but works from home full time. I currently budget £120 a month for maintenance/insurance/tax, so it's not a cheap 'nice to have'!
I had cambelt, brakes and full service done in April '19, then it sailed through it's MOT. It has the benefit (to us) of being a known entity. I appreciate that it'd be worth more with a 12 month MOT, or conversely that I could uncover a can of worms.
Would you be looking to sell it on a short MOT, or get it done before selling? Is it reasonable to ask a garage to give it a once over for any work that might come due? Would you be giving more thought to whether there's room for two cars in the budget?

MOT it mid March, you can take it for an MOT 30 days before its due to keep the same date - if it fails on serious stuff then you have saved yourself and the next owner a load of grief - if it passes then happy days.
If you want to sell it sooner then you can take it for an MOT anyway.
If its due a service then service it.0 -
I'd certainly MOT it, it will be worth more with a 12 month MOT, but I wouldn't service it if due in April, most people buying £1500 cars will either service it properly themselves, have a Kwik-fit cheap oil change, or not bother and run it into the ground- it won't be worth more by the cost of a full service, if it has just had one.
Either say nothing about a service due, or let them negotiate £50-100 off the price as it is "due a service"I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Fresh MOT for £40 or so (avoid kwik fit) and car will sell easily0
