iMac hardware fault after 15 months

Hi all

First off - I know Apple products aren't very money saving, no need to tell me lol :D

Purchased iMac August 2018 (just under 15 months ago) from Currys website. Has been working perfectly until this morning - a thin green line appeared on the display.

The computer itself is still functioning fine, but having spoke to Apple support they tried a fix to no avail and confirmed it was a hardware issue. I've not misused or damaged the computer in any way... it's one of my most prized possessions having saved up to buy it, so as you can imagine am not happy that it's developed a fault already when all it's done is sat on my desk and been used normally since I got it.

Having looked online a few people have had the same issue, so not sure if Apple are aware of the issue and would repair it out of the 12 month warranty for free? The recently did this for my Macbook screen as there was a known error with it. Really don't fancy going all the way to the Mac store to be told it's £100s worth of repair and they won't cover it when I don't believe I should be the one covering the cost.

So my question is do I get in touch with Currys online customer care first? As assume under Consumer Goods act they'll be the ones responsible for any faults?

Thanks

They will be responsible for providing a remedy but only for faults that have occurred due to a manufacturing defect.
If Currys require it, the onus will be on you to prove that the fault isn't down to misuse but was due to an inherent fault (such as a poor quality component that has failed early or incorrect assembly.

Your first step should be to contact Currys as they may well offer a repair straight away but if not you will then need to get a report stating what the cause of the problem is.
Depending on what the report states will determine your next move.

Thank you - have emailed Currys to see what they say. Will update when I get a response.
  • Had you bought it from John Lewis you'd have had a 24 month guarantee. JL would have matched Currys price.

Might be worth remembering for next time.
