It probably doesn't apply in this case, but you need to be aware that thieves can easily impersonate meter readers to gain access to the homes of vulnerable people.
Might be worth signing up to the Priority Services Register and the Identification scheme. This is to reassure you that callers, for example meter readers, are genuine. Suppliers have to provide additional support to help you identify someone acting on behalf of their company, such as arranging a password or showing an agreed picture card upon visit.
Many thanks Gerry1. When I first spoke to Shell their lady asked my age and said she'd register me on what I think you mention. She also set up additional security which the young man used when he came unexpectedly to look at the electricity meter. He wouldn't have got over the door unless he'd done all of that. What was great was that I told the lady from Shell that I can take a wee bit longer to get to the door than most, and the lad also knew that. I could hear him saying that I should take my time and there was no rush to open the door. It was much appreciated.
