This put me in mind of something I posted on another thread a while back, that may come in handy here too:Any particular reason not to get proper photo ID by the way, as that would make things so much easier?

I did look at the Virgin Money website the night before I went and checked the identification requirements. I'm fairly sure I even read MSE as well and got the distinct impression that, because the Virgin account was a basic account, you only needed "basic" identification in the form of a utility bill and some form of address identification so they could verify you were, at least, on the electoral roll.

Metro did accept the identification I had but I was just rejected after the application process which did surprise me as I was only ever applying for a basic account.

The reason I don't have the main identification documents are that I'm not allowed to drive for medical reasons and I don't have a passport because I've never been abroad and have no plans to do so, so I see no need to pay out to get one.

I'm aware of some of the ID card schemes in this country but i'm equally as aware that not all banks accept them as proof.

I've solved my "problem" now. I just applied for a basic bank account with Santander as a second account and it was approved on the spot, so no need for anything else now.

Try Yorkshire Building Society online. They verify ID electronically no ned to produce ID assuming of course that you are on ER etc.

Opened Tesco bank, TSB, Lloyds plus others with no ID being asked for, all opened online within minutes.
  • Why do you not possess a passport or at the bare minimum a provisional drivers license?

And why open a basic account with Santander?

A linked e-saver account to your existing account would have sufficed for all these strange money transfers surely?

    It’s all very bizarre.

    Thankyou :)

Anyway, it's hardly "bizarre" to want what is essentially the digital equivalent of a change jar. How many people come home at the end of the day and put their shrapnel in a jar/pot/tin ?.

I'm just doing it online ..

At the risk of repeating earlier debate, I'd still see the usual solution to your requirement as being a savings account rather than a second current account.

It is true that a small (and decreasing) number of current accounts offer better interest rates than savings accounts, but a big plus for savings accounts is that they don't involve credit checks and are therefore easier to open than current accounts.

Granted, your lack of formal photo ID is still likely to be a hindrance, but I'd still suspect that you'd be more likely to find a savings account than a current one.

Anyway, it sounds like you're sorted with something that fits you so it's all academic now, but for anyone else reading the thread who'd potentially be in this situation I'd still be inclined to point them towards savings accounts rather than current ones....
