Hi
My husband has received court papers issued by Gladstones. He stupidly ignored all there previous letters hoping that they would go away. He doesn’t really have any grounds for a defence and now the costs have gone up substantially....
Is it still possible to settle out of court or does he have to pay the inflated costs?

Why not ask Gladstones - costs can be settled out of court - but don't expect much of a reduction on what they want now.
Defend it and you could be paying nothing.
The key to your question rests not with Gladstones, but with the parking company involved, about which you have not informed us.Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I will ask Gladstones but I thought someone on here may be able to advise if they had been in a similar position.
The claimant on the court papers is UK Car Park Management Limited.
We could try a defence and see how it goes if ultimately we are going to be paying the costs anyway0

Before contacting anyone, just have a read of some UKCPM threads on the forum. They are litigious, but we beat them far, far more often than they win cases. If all you're going to save is a few quid, best defend it. We can help, but you/your husband will have lots of legwork to undertake.
What kind of car park is involved - residential, hotel, hospital, retail park ........?Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

It is a residential area on a new development. He was parked on the road. The problem is that there are multiple signs in the area saying that you can not park in the road.0

            UKCPM are residential 'specialists'!
Do some forum searches on keywords 'UKCPM residential. The contents of your deeds/lease/tenancy agreement in relation to parking will be important to your defence.

What does your lease/AST say about arking? Does it mention permits? Does it mention paying a parking parasite silly money if you do nor display one. If it is silent on the matter them your lease/AST has primacy and, if the are daft enough to take this to court they may get a bloody nose, read this

It is not a fine, it is an invoice from an ex- clamper for damages for the harm they allege they suffered when you did what you did. We call it a scam. Pay them not one penny unless a judge so orders it.
Nine times out of ten these tickets are scams, so consider complaining to your MP, it can cause the scammer extra costs and work.
Parliament is well aware of the MO of these private parking companies, many of whom are former clampers, and on 15th March 2019 a Bill was enacted to curb the excesses of these shysters. Codes of Practice are being drawn up, an independent appeals service will be set up, and access to the DVLA's date base more rigorously policed, persistent offenders denied access to the DVLA database and unable to operate.
Hopefully life will become impossible for the worst of these scammers, but until this is done you should still complain to your MP, citing the new legislation.

Just as the clampers were finally closed down, so hopefully will many of these Private Parking Companies.l

It sounds like your husband has received a County Court Claim Form.
If so, what is the Issue Date on that form?0

Luckily, that means there was no contract or parking licence on offer, to breach! It is a residential area on a new development. He was parked on the road. The problem is that there are multiple signs in the area saying that you can not park in the road. PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland). PRIVATE 'PCN'?
