lol yes, most faults on an EV would make £400 a bargain.

Such as? Brakes, suspension, cabin fittings and body work should be no different to any other car. I do accept a fault on the electric drive motor or gearbox could be pricey. From what I've read about the i3, the only option appears to be replacement and not a repair. But, I don't know how common the problem is or, how often petrol/diesel engines get replaced outside warranty.

I was thinking of breakages in the items I listed, not wear and tear. But I take your point about the high voltage components failing and their possible high price to replace at the moment.

I think your maths is possibly a bit wonky

You mention paying £60 net a month currently for fuel yet have your annual fuel bill as £2600

Even increasing the commute to 80miles on some days wont get close to this.

£2600 would be likely if you were doing the 80miles per day and not claiming any back however

Just thought it was easier to work it out gross, not considering what is paid back - work pay per mile at a flat rate so would get the same amount back per mile for an EV or a hummer. £50 per week is average current fuel spend across home and work, will be higher if commute increases but more will be paid back.

You're worried about £400 for a cam belt but considering a £10k loan? Think I'd be looking at the cambelt kit tbh....

Not worried about £400, just don’t want to spend on repairs if I’m imminently swapping the car.

In the past I would try and keep cars going as long as possible, but the whole point of the post is to work out whether an EV might be more economical than running a banger due to lower running costs, even factoring in finance cost.

Keeping the existing car is still an option, I’m trying to get info to make the best decision

Just to help with calculating fuel cost, which I've seen above...

Take your home charge per kWh - including VAT - it'll be roughly 15p per kWh. With this and a very rough, and slightly pessimistic M/kWh value, say 3 miles for every 1kWh, and that means it'll cost you 15/3= 5p per mile. As above, if you're planning to charge at home overnight, a night rate tariff could be very worthwhile.
  • The figures just don't quite add up yet for EVs, at least not for my circumstances (well, my wife's more accurately)

We were looking at EVs but went for a Skoda Karoq (petrol) on a lease in the end, over 10k miles a year it's £190 a month over 2 years (no deposit), probably about £100 a month for fuel. We could get a VW Golf EV for about £350 so it's still about £50 a month depending on how fuel costs pan out.

But I only got a 2 year lease as I will revisit again and wouldn't be surprised if the figures make the EV more attractive by then. Will be keeping an eye on it.
