EDF Smart meters
Hello I'm looking for advice from any on the forum who had EDF smart meters installed. Your information might help me make a decision.
I have been with EDF around 8 years now and mainly received good service: their customer service (IME) is really good, great website with a good chatline. In fact, the only annoyance is their tendency to (very occasionally) try to impose an exorbitant increase, until I put a stop to that. Last week I had sent a reading and was asked the next day for another: turns out the left hand had not seen the actions of the right hand, I corrected that simply and easily on the chatline. On Tuesday they sent me a bill with an unchanged DD amount. Today they sent another (exactly same Annual Consumption) and attempted to increase my payment by almost 40%. I contacted the chatline and refused to accept this. A very confusing statement of facts and reasons took place, which I totally disproved and followed up by saying that I would switch. A long wait was followed by an acceptance that my DD would not change and another bill would be issued online. I do not want to leave EDF: I like their service and have benefited from their help with problems caused by Northern Powergrid.
I have always resisted a smart meter, but I know that I could receive a better tariff if I allowed EDF to fit one. What I need is the advice of others who have had one from EDF:
* Can I expect a SM that could be used with another energy company, should I decide to switch?
* I live in a very poor area for reception of mobile, radio and TV signals. How well would a SM work under these circumstances?
All advice received with thanks.

If you do change to smart meter, make sure its a SMETS 2 version and not a SMETS 1 version.
SMETS 1 are no good if you ever want to change suppliers..

If you're in the north, mobile phone coverage won't necessarily indicate whether a smart meter will work.0

Thank you Gerry1 - I followed that up and discovered that a smart meter here would actually be dumb: I would have no IHD and would have to make my own readings, which I already do now anyway with no bother: the meters are just outside the door. I don't see the point of that, so refused. At least EDF were honest enough to give me the information.
So, no SM here! No worries,I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Have you done your own sums and predicted your own annual consumption and costs ? You don't want to be faced with a big catch up bill at the end of your fix.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Thank you Robin9, yes that's all done.I think this job really needs
