Dynamo/RecoverCover - beware!!!

I purchased breakdown cover from Dynamo Cover Ltd T/a Recover Cover and their claims handling intermediary, Policy Excess Insure Ltd (PEX Insure) acting for Nova Insurance (although no longer FCA authorized to do so, since July 19). £39.90 - I should have known it was too good to be true!

They refused to arrange recovery when my car broke down – claiming that the brief appearance of the oil warning light on ignition attempts demonstrated a failure on my part to correctly maintain the car. I had to shell out £70 to another recovery firm.

As anyone with the slightest knowledge of cars will know (and as my garage confirmed) there are many potential reasons for a loss of oil pressure leading to the the oil warning light appearing, and I was not at fault - it was just a failure of the oil pump. Dynamo now claim it's not their responsibility and PEX have simply refused to respond.

I'm taking PEX to the small claims court and am reporting both parties to Action Fraud and the Insurance Ombudsman, but wanted to alert forum members. Dynamo/RecoverCover have responded to my letters in an unhelpful if not belligerent way.

They also sent me an email announcing that they'd take auto-renew payment 2 weeks before my contract expired! Now, I know that auto-renewal often appears in the small print, but I checked carefully and there was no mention of it.

It's amazing that there seems to be no genuine consumer protection for mis-sold insurance - its looks as if practically anyone can register with the FCA and then think up some excuse not to pay up (assuming they ever intended to).
