When my HP laptop is switched off with the battery charger connected the battery charges.
When the laptop is switched on with the charger connected the battery does not charge.
Does anybody know the cause of this and how it can be fixed?
Thanks.

Try this...
1. unplug charger
2. take battery off
3. press & hold down the power button on lappy for at least a minute - this is the important bit
4. plug in charger with battery out
5. boot up lappy
6. shut down lappy
7. put battery back in
8. plug in charger and boot the lappy up.
It's often the electronic switching circuit that latches into an indeterminate state that causes this, the procedure above could well reset it.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

This is most likely going to be that the power supply isn't giving out the right voltage to charge the laptop. When the laptop is on it may be using more power than the charger can provide, and obviously when its off it's using next nothing. So you may need a new charger.0

It could be a hardware problem OR something like a Windows program that prevents the battery from charging if the current level is above a certain percentage (let's say 50%). This should theoretically extend the battery life because it keeps it around an 'optimal' charge level.
Try to see if the battery stops charging the moment you press the power button or only when it enters Windows.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
I've tried to take out the battery in the past but it doesn't seem possible with this laptop.
Could well be that I need a new charger.0 -
What model HP laptop? I cannot believe that it is not possible to remove the battery: it must be removable in order to buy and fit a new one.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

The HP I have now does not have a removable battery. It probably can be changed but I would have to take the bottom off to get to it.
Some units are just designed like that, more recent HP designs have moved towards an enclosed battery design. The famous G6 range was easy to change battery, you just flipped it over and there it was.0 -
Yes, especially with newer, thinner lappys, the batteries may not be "user-removable".....nothing but a cynical way of building in obsolescence in my opinion ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
