I don't see why people made such a big deal about this. People are broadcasting unsecured data over Wi-Fi into the street and then complain when its intercepted :rotfl:

Even worse, people are walking all over the place with a mobile phone that's collecting location data, and squirting out wifi and bluetooth data to anyone in the vicinity who want's to to collect it.
If you use Alexa, Siri, Cortana, or any other voice operated device you are also leaving yourself wide open to evesdropping so IMO worrying about a thermostat should be the least of your concerns, especially if you decide to link it into a voice operated app.
Add to that the use of payment apps and credit cards there really is nowhere to hide.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Getting back on topic, the main benefit of any programmable thermostat is that it gets you away from the antiquated culture of deciding whether to have the heating ON or OFF. At night, that means you can set a lower temperature than during the day so you're not too hot but don't have to freeze.
And once you've tweaked the temperature settings to suit your lifestyle, you don't do anything else. The thermostat sits there 365 days a year and will kick in whenever necessary to stick to your comfort levels. Any decent one will auto switch GMT/BST too.0 -
We have Hive and I can't say it has saved us money but the big thing for us is being able to control it via the app so no going away for the weekend and coming back to a cold house. We have also added a few Hive bulbs so can turn lights on before coming home as well.0
