Consumer Rights Act - inherent fault?

Sorry if this is a daft question, I'd appreciate any help. I bought a Hotpoint dishwasher from AO.com 15 months ago. It started leaking badly, and today an engineer confirmed that the control panel had failed.

He's sending a report confirming this, but although he said that a control panel shouldn't have failed after such a short time he didn't specify that it was an inherent defect so I don't know whether this will be in the report.

Under a Consumer Rights Act claim it looks like we have to prove that the fault was present at the time of purchase; how do we know whether this is the case? Should I ask the engineer whether it appeared to have been an inherent fault and to include that in his report? We've used the dishwasher relatively little (probably 1-2 a week at most) so it seems like it would be a build issue rather than as a result of misuse etc but I don't know how to prove it.

See what the vendor AO say as your Consumer Rights are with them .
You do not have to prove INHERENT .

I will be the first to admit that I'm not too mechanically minded but how could a failed control panel cause the appliance to leak?
Surely if the door was closed and the seals were intact then any water would either stay inside or go out via the drainage system.

If this was to proceed to (small claims) court then a judge would decide on the balance of probabilities ... whether one version of events was more likely than another. The word "inherent" doesn't need to be stated, as long as the general phrasing supports that version of events.

I did wonder that too, but some modern machines have weird and wonderful functions.
