Very much a scam. I'm sure there'd be another 'processing fee', followed by an 'approval fee', and then a 'give us a bit more money fee', followed by a 'oh you're easy to con fee'. You might want to keep a close eye on all of your credit reports for the next few months to make sure nothing unusual begins to appear.

I suspect the only scam here is the original post itself. It looks for all the world to be yet another one deliberately designed to incite reactions along the lines of 'it's obviously a scam; how stupid are you?' I think there are a few BS posters who are in competition to see who can suck in the most replies. It reminds me very much of the recent Filipino bride/reverse-vasectomy-on-credit thread in its intent.
  • I'm not a reg here on the MSE forums so I'm not sure who is / isn't being sarcastic... but this is real.

I posted a tutoring ad on Gumtree earlier today and this guy called me on a private number a few hours later. Same story — Qatari girl, asked for my email address and then sent me an email requesting a scan of my passport, scan of my DBS, copy of my CV, contact details for a referee.

I'd agree that the well-spoken nature of the guy, the clarity of the email etc. meant that some of the BS detectors weren't activated... but most of them still were!

So, now we have three examples, two from established posters (albeit one, the OP, very novice) and only one from a complete newbie. Are the doubters still doubting? My post #31 and flobberchops' post #40 both set out reasons not to doubt the original story and the second version.

I don't see why the "authenticity" of the OP story is such a concern.

If it's a troll post - you waste some time reading and/or feeding the troll - big whoop.

On the other hand if it's authentic - this will other users avoid the trap.

In this specific case I would have stopped listening the moment Bitcoin is mentioned as only payment method. Not to mention sending copy of passport to a stranger is a massive no-no in my books.

Ok... but the subsequent reports, particularly the last one, suggest the scam is real.

So the alert is useful, at least to those who might be taken in and it has, it seems, helped two people confirm it's a scam already. Possibly more, not everyone will actually post here.

Which suggests that anyone not reading beyond the mention of bitcoin etc because it seems like a troll post might well be misjudging it.

Those writing posts doubting it are doing others a mis--service as they are doubting the usefulness of something that has, it seems, been useful.

On the other hand - and playing devils advocate - if you had a child that needed tutoring and found an advert for a tutor what is the minimum documentary requirement you would ask for before considering whether to engage them or not...

I think I would first discuss the subject(s) to be covered, the academic qualifications of the tutor that sort of thing. I certainly wouldn't ask for money from them.

And I wouldn't ven know how to pay in bitcoin annd I imagine that 99.9% of teachers wouldn't either.
