Issues with contractor and newly laid driveway

Good evening guys,

Back in August I has a dropped kerb extended and the new drop tarmacked. This comes to approx. 50m2. After about 3 weeks or so, there were weeds growing through it, tire marks and it was crumbling away in places. I got in touch with the contractor, who said it must have been a dodgy batch of tarmac.

They came back on 24-25 October to remove the old tarmac and relay the driveway. After 48hrs or so (baring in mind we haven't used it yet) the drive was again showing signs of crumbling, roller marks from cross the width and it was extremely uneven.

I got in touch with the contractor again on Mon 28 Oct to explain the situation. he couldn't get out to see me that week but would come out this week. There's been no sign of him, I took some photos this week. While taking the pics, my neighbour came over and told me that the contractor had in fact been back the previous week and took photos himself but failed to mention this to me.

He has now texted me to say 'feel free to complain to the council', and that's it.

I'm not 100% what to do next, as my heads all over the place.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Was the extending of the dropped kerb organised via the council? Is it their contractor or did you organise your own?

Hi Phil, I had to get permission from the local council. Then find a contractor. The council used to give out a list of recommended contractors, but for some reason stopped doing so. However, I was supplied with the list they used to use and chose my contractor from that list. The highways guy spoke highly of this particular contractor.

    Thanks.
