Fence painting to preserve

What is the best thing to paint a fence, to stop it from rotting?
A friend paints his fencing with old engine oil. My fence is starting to rot, its around 4 years old. I painted it with a coloured fence paint when I built it and again a couple of years later.
It is in a shaded area.
Would varnish seal the wood better, instead of the water based wood paint? I dont have a long fence, only about 15 feet long

Its only "Wax enriched water repellent", I probably used something similar.0 -
Try a solvent based preserver such as this:
https://www.cuprinol.co.uk/products/shed_and_fence_protector.jsp
I have used it before and it sinks into the wood rather than just sitting on the surface.
I have use the Cuprinol Ducksback last year and was not impressed at all, much of it has already worn off.
Varnish would probably be the worst thing you could use it will trap moisture in the wood and speed up rotting.0 -

It works very well.
Next time buy pressure treated panels, they don't rot in 4 years0 -
If you're not fussed about colour, go for Creocote which is very similar to the old banned creosote. We used to use creosote, then went on to creocote. Fence has been in for 24 years and still going strong.
Use concrete posts and make sure you either use concrete gravel boards, or prop anything wooden on some part bricks to keep air circulating underneath.Make £2025 in 2025

If it is starting to rot, it is too late. Now that the water is within the timber, it will rot from inside.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

As mentioned above, its probably too late. when you replace the fence go with this:

I use it everywhere outside. Never use anything water based from the DIY sheds.0
