How did the identity thief find out your new address?

Hang on a minute let me just work my psychic powers, I’ll see if I can identify the identity thief too shall I? What an absolutely stupid question, if I knew that then I would of done something to prevent this happening again.
  • Could someone clarify for me (please) exactly what data a bank provides to the credit reference agencies when carrying out a check before opening an account? - and is it roughly the same data set that they would provide to CIFAS to check things there?

What I'm driving at here is the name discrepancy. There would be no file with Credit Karma or CIFAS under the shortened (or should we just say wrong) surname, so how could any search actually show up anywhere or find any results?

Would it also be true to say that because the credit check was not done through Experian then there would be no possibility of the Experian password being requested?

The search is also showing up on Experian so I’m assuming they’ve carried out a search with them, it’s also showing on CK. I have absolutely no idea how they managed to associate the wrong surname with my husband, I can only hazard a guess that because the DOB, first name and address were correct that the incorrect surname didn’t flag up. How that would happen I don’t know but thats what the search is showing and TSB confirmed it.
  • I guess it's lucky that TSB would actually speak to your husband, given that he isn't the named account holder. Just wondering whether the Electoral Register needs checking to see who is registered as living at your new address and how the surname is spelt on that - just thinking out loud now.

I'm guessing that TSB has put a 'stop' on the account so that there is no possibility of any debit card and PIN being sent out and, potentially, intercepted.

Wouldn’t TSB also ask for additional forms of ID e.g passport, driving licence, utility bill or such like before the account would be set up?

TSB agreeing to speak with him was a concern to be honest, luckily they did. They put a freeze on the account but said some correspondence had been sent out and to ignore it, they also said that they will investigate and write to him within 7-10 days. Technically the person named on this account t doesn’t exist so Ive no idea how TSB didn’t pick up on it. The details on the ER were correct the last time they sent the form out, but I will check now as that’s something I hadn’t considered, thanks.

You’d like to think so, it was applied for online. I know when I opened my Nationwide account they didn’t ask for proof of ID as I was registered on the ER. I remember at the time asking why they don’t want proof of ID.

The ER entry will be shown on his Experian credit report which presumably you checked in order to be aware of the fact that his Experian credit files were searched.
I also find it very odd indeed that the identity thief had the correct number for time at current address but entered it as years instead of months.
But the strangest thing is how the identity thief who bought the furnature and opened up accounts two years ago when you lived at your previous address could possibly know that you had moved to your current address and why this individual would have started this up again two years later, unless the individual is a personal friend, work colleague or family member.

I’ve already stated we had checked the file, stupidly not the ER information as this doesn’t pop up on the file search results as I’m sure you’re aware. I’m not really sure why you’re still commenting on this post to be honest, is it to make yourself feel important? You clearly absolutely nothing useful to add.
