We don't have a number or even a road name. The barn was named by us when it was converted and we had to notify the local authority and ask Royal Mail to include the address on their register. Never had an issue, other than people cannot find us (in the real world) as our post code (which is only applicable to us) takes you down a lane 1/4 mile away.

there is no "correct" number as who knows what end to start counting from or which side should be even numbers .
In the road I live in, the houses (all built at the same time) are numbered sequentially, up to 22 on one side of the road and 23 onwards coming back in the opposite direction on the other side of the road.

Ive just done a bit more digging into this. The council have confirmed I have no number attached to my house, but all my neighbours do! Whats weirder is the sequence of numbers are: 1, 1A, my property, 3, 4.
So logically I should be No. 2.
Is there any benefit to having a number assigned to a house?
Other than the Council's fee, would there be any others? (Change of address on drivers license, passport etc...)
    Thanks

All the houses in my street have names and none have numbers.  It's unlikely you'll have the same problem but I have a restriction in my deeds preventing me giving my house certain names (although not stopping me changing it).

Delivery men will be able to find you easier?

I knew a house named Yan Tan Tethera. All the adjacent houses were also named but there certainly wasn't that many houses on that road

You might not get to eat their Fortnum and Mason Christmas hamper this year.

Seriously, I'd get this resolved ASAP.  Mail going astray might lead to problems with credit scores if bills/motoring fines go astray.

Definitely do it properly with the Council's Address Gazetteer people (who will charge a fee).  To be pedantic about this, every properly registered property has a unique number (from memory, this is about 9 digits long) on the official databases, and this allows cross-matching between names, physical street numbers, postcodes, valuation rolls, electoral registration and emergency services.

Too many people think casual name changes are OK, because the postie still finds them, but don't realise that the emergency services may not.

Numbers can be useful in certain circumstances and it is possible to use both a name and a number if that makes sense in your circumstances.

Even properly registered changes can cause unforeseen problems, though.  A colleague of mine has had repeated credit check problems because her mortgage was registered to the house plot number rather than the name that was registered as the address once the house was built.  Despite years of trying to rectify this, it still comes back to bite her from time to time, even though the mortgage is long since paid off.

    Thanks all.

Ive discovered that I dont need to change my passport for a 'change of address', and its free to change the address of a driver's license. (I mention it here in case it helps anyone else in a similar situation).

I think I will apply to have a number assigned to my house, as well as a name change. It gives delivery men another reference to find the house under.

Interesting what you say about it possibly affecting credit score. This is exactly the sort of unforeseen consequence I fear. But perhaps I shouldnt let it put me off.

You can access your unique property reference number via a number of sites such as findmyaddress.co.uk

I guess it depends on the algorithms used by the credit agencies, but some may log this as a "change of address" and since they use length of time at the same address as a component of the score, this element may reset to zero.  However, I think the period of time on voters' roll is based on the polling district rather than the actual address, so this element may not reset.
