Agree Cloud, I went into town last Friday, people walking on icy pavements, yet loads of dolees standing about.
What's wrong with a State of Emergency, pay the unemployed temporally say £10 or £20 a day without it affecting their entitlement.0 -
if you clear your path and someone slips you can be sued. never happened years ago, everyone did their own bit.0

I heard tht it was less expensive to keep the boiler running at a low temperature eg 15c, 24/7 rather than having it on a timer because it uses more energy to heat from scratch rather than to sustain a temperature. Does anyone know if this is true?
There's plenty of discussion about this on the Gas & Electric board. It's not true.0 -
But carlislelass, when I clear the pavement outside my property it is spotless and slipfree because I do a job properly, so how can someone slip and then sue? Surely, it would be the other way round?
I struggled walking home from the tube station last week on the pavements, and although I was wearing my big walking boots with practical soles :-) I still had to walk quite carefully because the pavements were like ice rinks (no grit). Ended up walking on the road which were sort of gritted (still quite icy but easier to negotiate than the pavements).
Interestingly, all the pavement section outside my elderly neighbours were spotlessly cleared. My cynical side says that our darling council is looking after our elders to avoid negative publicity, bah humbug to the rest of us, my moral side says our auldians have a sense of duty and consider the pavement outside their properties a responsibility. I'm with the latter!!!

I save money by refilling my printer cartridges at Cartridge World when they are empty. I pay £10 to have my Canon BC-02 cartridges refilled at Cartridge World when they are empty, a significant saving on the £24.99 I’d be paying for a new cartridge from Staples. Not only am I saving money, but I'm also saving empty print cartridges from landfill where they can take years to decompose!0

One for next winter, bubble wrap your windows (a note on this I stapled bubble wrap to an old roll up blind and reduced condensation with this but you still need to air the house and reduce sources of condensation.):

Down to personal taste - insulate your fridge :

One to check in your library:

We are living in a Park Home while we build a house. We have been here for three years (nearly finished now).
For two years we always left the pilot light on our (bottled) gas water heater. Average time that bottle of gas lasted = 7 weeks.
For last year we have turned off pilot light between uses. Average time that bottle of gas now lasts = 19 weeks.0 -
Hi everyone my main energy saving ideas picked up on mse are:money:
1. line dry all washing, hard to dry jeans. I put into my car and the little bit of sun shining heats car up inside and the jeans dry very quickly.
2. buying a remoska, never use main oven now, have saved £10 per week off leccky bill, i bake alot, homemade bread is the new fav. Slow cooker is great aswell. Saving at the moment for a pressure cooker.
3. boil kettle once in the morning and fill flask, keeps me going in coffee rest of day.
4. have had heating off since March, just starting to put on few hours now. Wearing extra clothes, snuggling under blanket in evenings to watch tv. Light few tealights on hearth for bit of a glow.Using hot water bottle.
5.Cooking from scratch as much as possible, can't believe how easy and cheap hm pizza's are, and you can freeze them too.
6. Thinking about car use, planning trips to do more wee jobs at the same time. I would normally just jumped into the car without much thought, have saved lots of petrol and time by doing this. Taking flask along for quick cuppa, saves on coffee shop stop.
7.Washing on low temp., quickwash, with 1/2 the recommended powder. Bed linen and towles done at higher temp.
8. Started using bar of soap, instead of shower gel, soap lasts for ages.
9. Shopping at the market once a week for veg, no packaging to throw away.
10. Stopped buying advertised cleaning stuff. Cleaning os with tips off this board. Stardrops and micro cloths, being my favs.
11. Started to keep a well stocked store cupboard of non perishables. buying in bulk, and using money off coupons, saved loads doing this.
12. Having nsd's This was very hard to do at first, getting into the swing of it now, usually manage 15 per month. Meal planning greatly helps with this. So does the 4k per year board.
That's about all the main things that have made a difference to me, every time i come on to this board i get another wee tip. Keep posting everyone i just love all the great free advice.:j0 -
I Love this thread with all these good ideas for saving money and going green. One thing I do that saves us money is invite guest over for dinner once or twice a week, and in turn we visit them for dinner once or twice a week. It cuts down on the time and energy spent in the kitchen and I love the company. I would love to share a funny graphic about going green. typobounty.com/com/Funny/Going_Green.htm0
