Sold flat and left country and had a speeding ticket days before flying - not received until now.

Hi there
I'm in a fairly unique position where:
- I sold my flat in July
- I left the country for 3 months
- Came back mid-October and now renting
I didn't have time to do a post-forwarding service nor change my address with DVLA, before I left. I've just picked up my post from the current owner of my flat and buried amongst it is just one (plain enveloped) letter from Met Police. It's a "Final Reminder", dated 18 August and saying I have 7 days to reply (which has well and truly been and gone).
It seems I was caught doing 24mph in a 20mph zone, a few days before we left the country. There doesn't seem to have been any other letters.
I'm going to try and call them tomorrow morning as their lines are only open 9am to midday. I just wondered if anybody knew where I stood with this? The letter states the worst-case of £1000 fine and 6 points. This is my first speeding ticket ever and I feel awful :-(
Thanks
