Why is my ceiling bubbling/plaster a bit bad?

I’ve just had my ceiling skimmed and after waiting 10 days it was painted. Used the usual water down paint and then two coats over a few days.

However I’ve no noticed there are a few ripples in the ceiling and the paint is bubbling. Perhaps the bubbles are due to paint, ok easily removed. However I’m concerned that I managed to pop one of the bubbles :/

  • Actually I think this is a continuation of my other issue on the other thread I have going. Perhaps delete?
  • I think the ceiling has blown. I’ve touched a bit of plaster and it feels loose. Tut. If I look at pictures I can see there was an area that was patched up.... so I don’t know why it hasn’t stuck.

Is it where screws/nails have been used to attach plasterboard to the ceiling battons? Sometimes there's a reaction between the plaster skim coat and the metal and the plaster pops away. You need to dig out the plaster, paint over the screw/nail head with an oil based paint, let that dry, fill with something like polyfilla, sand it down then paint.

Old house with lath & plaster ceilings - If the ceiling had been painted with distemper and not properly prepared, nothing will stick. Great if the ceiling had been coated with artex, most of it will peel of in sheets. Not so good when skimming, as the new plaster will eventually fall off.

Ceiling #1 looks like your typical lath & plaster with the common problem of cracking. It should have been scrubbed to get rid of any loose material and then the cracks taped - However, that won't stop the cracks from reappearing again.

Ceiling #2 has characteristic straight line cracks typical of plasterboard. The coving is modern which suggests that the ceiling has been overboarded or replaced in the last 20-30 years. Depending on how the boards have been fixed, taping the joints before skimming may be sufficient. The ceiling would still need a good scrub to remove the loose crud.

  • Thanks!

I’m not sure the three plasterers did that :/

With regards to what to do in the future, can I take of the area that’s come away and latch it up? Or is plaster ‘all for one and one for all’
