Further thought; since when did councils undertake non-essential work, like removing chimney breasts from properties?

Was it during the 13 years of Tory misrule, or perhaps in the Blair era of 'blue sky thinking'?

I guess we'll never know. Anyway, gallows brackets are out of favour now with many structural engineers. It'll be a ruddy great RSJ .....or you could always reinstate the chimney and have an Aga, dahling!

Whatever else may be true, the chimney hasn't collapsed in a 'long, long time' so the argument that the support provided was inadequate is contradicted by the facts.

It may be deemed inadequate now, but now isn't then. Now, people mindful of the potential for litigation, tend to over-specify, or in modern parlance 'cover their @r$es.

Or you could say, it hasn't fallen down yet.

One could say that about many thousands of other properties, built long before structural engineers and building regs were invented, but of course, having uncovered a structural weakness, one deals with it.

Mind you, a chimney versus an extra bit of CLS 4x2 doesn't look like much of a contest, if it decides inconveniently to give up the struggle against gravity this afternoon!
