Spaniel lip fold operation

Morning, as previously mentioned i have acquired a lovely 2 yr old cocker and we are doing well together. However he has lip fold problems. The vet has given me some wipes to use twice a week but it's a real struggle to keep him still enough to use as I'm obviously hurting him, however when I succeed the amount of gunk is horrendous.

The vet mentioned a procedure where the lip fold is removed - has anyone done this and was it successful? Also how much did it cost?

We're going back to the vets in a week or so to see if it's any better but if I've failed to clear it up then what do people suggest as options.
