Can a new driving licence holder work as a van driver?

Under 3.5 ton van, in the same category as a regular car. Someone has told me that it's illegal to drive a van for work if your driving licence is less than 12 months old. I couldn't find info about such law anywhere online. Please tell me if such a law exists.

It may due to insurance that a company has. I know for instance a previous company I worked for anyone who drove a (Under 3500kg) van had to be over 21 with 12 months clean licence to be covered by our insurance.

No idea, but we have a works van and no-one either under 25 or without having held a full driving licence for x years is insured to drive it, plus they need experience of driving a similar vehicle.

I'm not saying we couldn't get insurance for someone under 25 / recently passed their driving test, but I wouldn't even bother trying because it would cost the proverbial arm and leg. Same with points on their licence: 6 for speeding, I will ask, usually not a problem as long as we declare it. 12 or more, nope, not going to happen.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • I'm over 25, just a new driving licence.

No law against it as others have said insurance may be an issue but if it's a decent size fleet policy it may not make much difference as they look at the total risk on the policy not each driver individually

True, but the insurer will also impose conditions on the employer in terms of who can and can't be covered under the policy - and 'must have held a full clean driving licence for xxx years' or similar is pretty common.

No law that I am aware of but, as others have said, the company insurers may well want a minimum of 12 months experience. If I was an employer I wouldn't want a new driver out and about in one of my vehicles.

True, but moving from virgin to harlot rarely requires the 'trainee' to be in charge of a ton or more of metal when probably working under pressure.

How many rides would be required to take a new driver from virgin to harlot status?
