Options
Hi Guys - need some help with my sky yahoo emali which I access on my windows 10 laptop. Received the following email from sky today

We’ve noticed that you may be accessing your Sky.com email on your mobile, tablet or other device using an out-of-date version of an email application such as Apple Mail, Outlook or Windows Live Mail.

To ensure a better and more consistent experience for all our customers, out-of-date versions of these email applications will no longer be supported by Sky.com email from 18/11/2019.

My question is, what is it I need to update (presumably the windows app) but I do not see how to update to latest version. Any advise please

Sorry - don't know what yu mean. I have an email app on my W10 laptop, using an @LIVE email account. On the laptop, I linked the sky yahoo email to the LIVE account. Has been working fine for quite sometime, but I don't understand what Sky are saying that I need to update to a later version. This is what they say on their HELP site

    WINDOWS LIVE MAIL
Sky emails are no longer supported on this version of the email client.

You’ll need to update to the latest software version.

You might need to speak with Microsoft or Outlook support if this option isn't available.

You can still sign in to your emails via sky.com.

Don't know what to do- perhaps phoning sky

Just found out there's also something called Windows 10 Mail which I think is still supported by Sky. I think I have windows 10 mail. Quite frankly, I'm totally baffled.

Looks like you are using a couple of email addresses, e.g. linda@live.co.uk (the LIVE or Microsoft one) and linda@sky.com You've set both of these up so that they are accessible using the program/app Windows Live Mail(WLM) on laptop (and possibly even the Windos 10 Mail app? - but that's not the problem).

WLM is ancient; all Sky are saying I think is that from 18th Nov if you ring them with any questions and you say that you are using WLM then they will not help you. OR they may be saying that accessing your Sky email using WLM will not work from that date.
Best thing to do? Leave WLM as it is; just install a WLM-look-alike e.g. Thunderbird and add your email accounts to it. Thunderbird and WLM can run together (**)

(**) unless your set up is really old and you're using POP, in which case you need to refer to a computer friend, or shout here.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

What is the name of your email app?
What do you do and what do you click on to get your email? What do your icons look like?

If you don't know waht you're using for your email its hard to advise.

As GRUMPYCRAB said, it's either the W LIVE mail or the W10 mail. Suspect it's the W LIVE mail since sky are saying that it's no longer supported. As for what the icon looks like, it's a blue box with an open envelope in the middle. It comes up when I click the W button on the start menu. I tried looking for properties but I can't get anything.

Grumpycrab's assumptions are correct. How do I install windows 10 mail if the live version is out of date

Not using POP. I'm using IMAP to link the 2 email accounts as referred to in grumpycrab's reply

  • i use windows live mail on my windows 10 laptop using sky's yahoo service. i have not received this email.
i believe it is just informing you that it will not be supported technically in the future.

i keep with windows live mail as i was an old outlook express user back in the day and i just like this layout. i have tried others but it never seems to transfer over fully with the multiple mail folders i have created over the years. i tend to find it all merges into 1 inbox.
unless i'm doing it wrong? i have read about classic oe which is supposed to be like the old outlook express programme. has anyone used it?

Just a quick update. I phoned Sky and asked them what the email is about. They were absolutely useless. First, they said that the email was not from them and that it was a hoax. When I told them that it's very unlikely to be a hoax as the email corroborates the sky help text on their website, she said she'll check with someone else. When she came back, she then told me that the email came from Yahoo not sky, even though it was signed as 'sky team'. So it's nothing to do with them and advised me to call Yahoo who will guide me to change the settings. Needless to say that the number she gave me for Yahoo is unobtainable. All in all, I just wasted an hour on the phone - with only about 5 mins of talk rest hanging on. I'll just wait for the 18th Nov and see what happens - suspect nothing!!

  • The final release of Windows Live Mail was in 2012, so it's seven years old and has received no updates in that time. It is not unsurprising that providers will opt to stop supporting it, although if it talks standard IMAP4 (rather than DeltaSync which was MS proprietry) I don't see how they'll know..
