Electric cars

Interesting thread learnt quite a bit about EVs reading this, thanks.0

I looked at a Zoe for myself, but as I spend less than £49 a month on petrol, it seemed a bit pointless.
(Remember that this price includes breakdown cover and an improved battery warranty when comparing).0 -
The main thing which puts me off EVs (bar the cost!) is what happens during the unexpected. As an example, my daily commute is 20 miles and takes 40 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. A few weeks ago that commute took me 5 HOURS due to congestion caused by a serious crash on an adjacent motorway. I set off in daylight and arrived home gone 10pm in the dark. I had the radio on for updates (hoping that it would tell me that the closure had been lifted!). If I’d run out of petrol, I could have called rescue, or even walked to the nearest garage (in fairness, as I’m disabled I would have probably asked another driver to do this!). If I was in an EV, what would have happened? It was bad enough crawling forward without worrying about charge.0

An electric car will use less energy to travel the same distance at a slower speed.
The radio is powered by the same 12v battery in your ICE car. So the only real concern is the heating or AC. However this uses Wh, rather than kWh, so unless you happened to travel at the very limit of the battery to complete your 20mile journey, that wouldn't even cross my mind...0 -
Tesla's are way better than other electric cars, with much longer range and better software.
You can pick up a secondhand Model S (their top of the range Sedan) for around £30k and the cars from back then come with lifetime free charging at superchargers (an offer they no longer give with their newer cars).0 -

Yes, but that's £30000 for a second-hand car!
The most I have ever spent on a car was £12000. I could buy a huge amount of petrol and road tax with the £18000 saved by not getting a Tesla. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
for me... stick with petrol for the next eg 10 yrs0

As DrEskimo says, you'd have been fine with any decent amount of charge. Movement is by far the most energy expensive thing a car does. Since you were crawling, you'll barely have used any energy for that. When you're sitting doing zero MPG, you're still using 'G'. When you're sitting in an EV doing zero 'MPkWh', you're not using any 'kWh', apart from the relatively tiny amount even all the accessories could draw. You can pick up a secondhand Model S (their top of the range Sedan) for around £30k
I haven't seen them below £40, care to share?0 -
