Can I have a Real fire in a 'Living Flame' Grate?

We have a living flame gas fire which is no longer connected to the gas supply - so it sits there unused.
We're getting our chimney checked/swept and assuming that's OK, is there any reason we shouldn't have a real fire in the living flame grate?
(There is a gas burner/nozzle beneath the grate which I will remove - otherwise the grate appears to be a normal cast Iron grate.)
