Halfords Car Battery Warranty For Used Car

Under EU law all products of this type have a minimum 2 year warranty
That's a very common misconception.
All that the EU 2 year "guarantee" means is that you have up to 2 years from the date of purchase to take legal action against a retailer for faulty goods and not that these goods must last 2 years.
The UK doesn't follow this ruling as our legislation allows a consumer up to 6 years to do the same.
In both cases, after 6 months from purchase the consumer still has to prove that the fault is due to a manufacturing defect and not a failure due to misuse.0 -
I had a Bosch battery that was sold with a 6 year warranty. When it failed Bosch said it had a one year warranty and refused to do anything. When I was researching I found plenty of references to Halfords warranty being pretty much useless. When people take a battery in Halfords use every excuse they can think of to avoid replacing them. Some people did manage to get replacements so not universal.0

The reason why some people can get refunds is that they know that the company response will always be financially or personally motivated.
If the company is certain that to continue disputing will cost more than accepting then they will refund without accepting liability.
This is how I have very successfully persuaded companies that it is in their best interests to refund.
To do this, you need to completely ignore support call centres and find out where the real head office is - usually located a long way away.
If in doubt, google search for any legal actions involving the company. This usually shows up the real Head Office address.0 -
^^^^ yep.
Halfords tools come with a lifetime warranty. A few years back they started requiring receipts for the tools. Some store managers would try to fob you off, but the tools were sold originally under different conditions.
You just had to pick the right moment to be in store and be quite vocal about it and you'd get a "good will gesture this time only" etc.
Dont give up. Ever.
I'm positive that in the call centre industry at least one of my calls is being used as a training guide on how not to pee off a customer calling in.0 -

If I bought a car with a broken Halfords battery less than a years old and wasn't the customer either, I'd still be getting myself a refund for it being not suitable for purpose.
Regardless of the warranty terms or your opinion on it, a mere technicality that the OP doesn't hold the receipt doesn't mean the product isn't faulty. It just means it's much harder for them to gain a refund upon it vs Halfords T&C.
It's up to them if they want to give in before satisfaction is achieved and how belligerent they are willing to be about it.
It's what "good will gestures" are made for.0 -

The OP's beef is with the garage which sold him the car with the duff battery.0 -

The OP wanted advice on whether to pursue this matter, but they have no contract with Halfords and no proof that the battery was even bought from Halfords. It could be a reject meant for disposal for all Halfords know. That's not to say they won't give a goodwill gesture of some sort, it just seems unlikely and not worth pursuing.0 -
H'm I've been looking at batteries, the one on the car is pretty old, but seems to be at about 75% charge after a few days measured by the voltage.
I was looking at Halfords batteries. . .
Perhaps I'll look elsewhere.0
