Windows and McAfee AV

Options
I've bought an Asus laptop - the "onboarding" process offers McAfee AV but my last laptop went fatally wrong when there seemed to be a conflict between Windows 10 and the free AV I had installed.

Will Windows itself be OK or do I need to install McAfee and not have to worry about a conflict with Windows?

Many thanks for advice.

The built-in "Windows Defender" is fairly good these days, plus you can switch on Ransomware protection in Windows 10, as it isn't on by default.

Make sure that the av is really free, rather than a continuous re-occurring payment that either has already come out of your account, or will come out of your account in 3 months. Read that sales receipt, and take a photo of it and email it to yourself, because it will possibly fade in 3 months, and the store may ask for a sales receipt in the coming months if something goes wrong, or another payment taken.

Just to say that the free AV I had installed on my old laptop was one mentioned in this forum (a long time ago) and was indeed free.

I would certainly be checking re the McAfee (which is a service my late husband may have used a decade or so ago but I think had long ceased to use).

    Just remove it.

  • I too recently bought an Asus laptop (Vivobook from Amazon). It came with various junk programs pre-installed, including trial versions of MS Office and McAfee. I have no idea what you mean by “the "onboarding" process offers McAfee AV”

Sadly, in common with many computer manufacturers, Asus include unwanted junk that most of us de-install at the first opportunity. McAfee is probably the worst AV product on the planet, yet seems to be the most pushed... as Everywhere said, just get rid of it.
  • By "onboarding" I meant the initial set-up process. There was the opportunity to install McAfee but it was not already running.
