Best place to find a car's value?

I am interested in a cheap run-round for myself, and my manager at work is selling something I think would be ideal
It is on Autotrader for £999
I've gone to two insurance comparison sites and put in the registration number and the two sites have come back with very different valuations
One says £900, the other says £295
Is there a better site to use to find out what kind of private sale price is correct?

What are cars for the same make model mileage asking?0

Old cars can vary a huge amount, with condition, length of mot and any history all being relevant. It's unusual where I stay to get anything usable below £500. Knowing the person and the experience he has had with it will provide some reassurance.
All of that is academic however. If he wants £1k for it you're unlikely to get it for £300 regardless of what a website tells you.0 -
For a grand, it's more about condition and length of test than about make-model-age-mileage.0

Use Autotraders own valuation tool.
Found it to be quite good in the past.
