Damp "tanking"

Options
The guy we bought our house from was a bit of a DIY-er...

After we moved in we realised the reason he freshly painted the extension was to hide a damp problem.

Not only that, but a damp tradesman visited today and said the cause of it was the decking he built was higher than the floor of the extension and has suggested we need "tanking" to resolve.

Any idea how much this will cost? The extension is maybe a 4m x 4m room.

Cheers!

I’d post this on the main ‘In my home’ bit for some advice. It sounds crazy to me to tank an internal wall to solve damp from decking. The solution should be to remove the source of the damp which could be as simple as removing a bit of the decking so it’s not in contact with the wall.

Damp ‘specialists’ have a bit of a bad name round here. They’re in the business of selling their services but it’s often only a temporary fix.

Sorry, I know I’m not answering your question but I do think it’s worth discussing the problem - maybe with some pics - before spending money. There are lots of people who regularly post on In My Home who’ll give an informed and impartial take on the problem.

I agree, come and post some pics on the main In My Home board and let's look.

The solution really should be to undo what has been done to cause it, not start damaging the house further. Tanking the inside walls won't actually stop the damp getting into the wall, it will just stop it showing.

That guy only sells damp proofing, he won't offer to sort the decking out, but the decking is the problem. Take the decking away - or part of it - and you've solved the problem and haven't destroyed your house at great cost.

If you were in the shower and didn't want to be wet, you'd step out of the shower. This guy is suggesting you buy a raincoat from him.
