Cold in the attic.

    Ooo, harsh.

I've answered some of the questions asked - where I know the answer. Don't know about the insulation. If you're right that the attic should be warm if it's insulated, and I've already said that it's cold, I guess we've answered that question?

Anyway, I've got a central heating engineer coming out tomorrow to take a look.

Ooo, harsh. Especially as it's only two days since I posted.

Please do come back and let us know what he says. It's always helpful to hear what the answer to a problem was, but often these threads just fizzle out without knowing what the OP did to solve the problem, or what the outcome was (did it work, etc.).

Hope that's not too harsh. ;)

  • I would add the kW output of all the radiators and see if that is less than the output of the boiler. Most boilers in averaged sized houses have plenty of spare capacity for heating. If plenty spare I would fit a bigger or extra radiator. Most boilers (I think) , are sized for the hot water demand. From my experience even radiators sized correctly by an online calculator are sometimes too small. I will always size for worse case house scenario (calculators may work correctly for new houses ?)
I have a proper attic (stairs up to it) and it is insulated with 2 inch kingspan on the roof and down the front and back of room (where it is a stud wall and behind is the rest of the roof going down to the edge of the building). No insulation at the sides which are part of the adjoining wall to the terrace house either side.
I find even with this insulation the attic cools down much quicker than other rooms. It gets to temperature but while the other rooms are still okay the attic has cooled down. The only solution was to have the thermostat in that attic and adjust the radiators in other rooms accordingly (assuming they all have TRV). Unfortunately I was not prepared to do that as the lodger would overheat his room then open the velux (or have the velux open on a cold day) costing me a lot of money so I just did the best I could (I had the main room with thermostat hotter than I would normally then turned down TRVs on all the other rooms). During the night I had to leave the heating on to stop the attic cooling down too much.

One of my lodgers has complained of being cold in her room. Pointed out that it would be a waste of time & money turning the heating on if the bedroom windows were wide open. Agreed a compromise that the heating would come on in the evening if the windows are kept closed. Also got a fluffy dressing gown for her and extra thick duvets all round.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
