Smart meter resding jumped 600 units overnight

How accurate are smart meters? I just noticed yesterday after receiving my 6 monthly review and my payments are doubling that some of my readings dont look right. British gas have my smart meter reading taken on 30th October as 10812. When i took it yesterday it was reading 11422. Thats used 610 units in one day. My average usage is 8 units a day. So after looking back all readings I noticed this is not first this has happened, between 19th and 21st March says I used 652 units. Then October last year it shows over 99000 units were used. Im guessing they noticed that and fixed it somehow. I normally wouldnt notice this as when i get statements in I check bill against smart meter reading and theres only ususlly few units difference, but it was only because this was a day apart and there was 600 units difference. After speaking to BG i have to record my usage daily, but how will they sort the days with high usage and has this happened to anyone else?

  • I presume this is for Gas. If so monitor very closely. I recently had a similar issue with my daughter and EON. After much investigation following a £500 gas bill last spring she had a faulty (non-smart) electronic gas meter. Only resolved because I insisted it be sent off for testing and was proven as a major fault. I'm not saying that's your issue, but just be aware as the energy companies aren't really interested as they see it as 'your problem' unless you can prove otherwise. Good luck

  • No its for electric. My gas meter is not on smart as the range between the gas and electric meters are too far apart
  • Oh ok, either way there's no way any of those usage figures can be right and if it was me, given the other historical errors you mentioned as well, I'd be insisting that they replace the meter as I would have no confidence in that at all. It's all well and good monitoring every day but if it can fluctuate so wildly in just one day then there must be something wrong surely.

This is another reason I will never have a smart meter, these so called infallible meters are such junk.

Make sure you take photographic evidence of the faults and dispute all previous bills since she has been there.

I think it is rotten that they can take a meter away and test it, such meters should go to an independent 3rd party.

She is entitled to have an audit meter installed which runs at the same time.
