Actually, that's not correct. Notice runs from the *after* it is handed in, so if notice was handed in on Friday and the notice period is one week, the notice expires at the end of the working day on Saturday.https://www.acas.org.uk/givingnotice

So they are entitled to require you to work on Saturday but not on Sunday.

Of course, if they confoimred in writing that you r last day was Friday then you can argue that they cannot withdraw that , but technically that will have been an agreement to short notice, so if it wasn't expressly confirmed in writing it is reasonable for them to wantyou to work your notice, which would include Saturday.
give notice on a Friday the week starts Sat and finishes Friday

Count the days. Unless a week is now 8 days Sat-Fri is 7 days.

The acas link you provided says the same.

That was a week ago. We could be talking about another employer by now.

As a dumpy lady, I worked in hotels in the early 00's uniform wearing without problem - they always got the bigger size.
T Cook I wore a a flooty longer skirt instead of pencil coz I was a larger lady.

I work with many average sized people in the uniform setting and I notice on the rise with them is b.o so perhaps being different makes you take care of yourself in other ways.

Anyway looking forward to dumping the size 20/22 jacket (from Sainsbo) come a couple of days. (latest place was a supply your own uniform)

It was said a hotel reception only employs glamour puss but I didn't let it put me off.

Are you leaving Sainsburys or did you just buy the jacket from there?

    Really mean.

    How so?

Unfortunately the OP seems to swing from one casual job from another, on a timescale of weeks not years, so it’s not beyond the realms of the possible.

OP, you seem to really struggle holding down a job for long, I hope that you do better in the next one.

Maybe so, but pointing it out doesn't really add much to the discussion :)

OP, I would consider the possibility that a reference (not even a neutral one) won't be forthcoming here. I'd consider giving the new employer a heads-up and letting them know of the possibility of you not getting a reference. Maybe offer alternatives such as:

    - Asking another previous employer
    - Using a character reference (maybe even a manager/colleague whom works in the ex job BUT I don't know if they can act as a company reference or not)
    - Providing evidence of employment through wages slips etc (not much different that getting a neutral "keep calm worked here" reference really, aside from basic disciplinary/sickness notes etc.

Could also maybe agree to work the Sunday as a compromise, but maybe put that into a letter confirming that you are going above and beyond your Saturday notice date as agreed in the contract (you doing them a favour) on the presumption that you will get a reference. No idea if that would hold up ANYWHERE should you not get a reference, but it may be enough to make them think twice about not replying to the reference request.

In that post it appears the jacket was bought from Sainsbury's because the place from which she is leaving ("latest place") required them to provide their own uniform. So it would appear to have been an ordinary jacket which met the employer's criteria for workwear.
  • Thanks. Here is an update, they allowed me to finish last night on the late.

I didn't mention anything to do with the reference in the end - I had already told the new employer as I submitted details I wasn't confident of how responsive they would be so decided it wasn't worth any more agro.
